JDBY Boys School Addition Chicago, IL
The Joan Dachs Bais Yaakov Boys school is a K-9 boys school in Chicago, Illinois. The new 3-story school addition is an expansion to the existing 2-story school building. The new addition provides a total of 18 classrooms, dining/multi-purpose room in basement and an outdoor playground on the roof. The exterior design incorporates similar aesthetics as the existing building to compliment the existing building. The use of brick and lime stone accents provides a classic take on the addition with a modern taste for simplicity. The outdoor playground, located on the building roof was designed with safety in mind, using a special impact absorbent rubber floor tile on the roof membrane with fun colors and orthogonal kid-friendly patterning. The challenge facing this project was weak soils, requiring the building to be set on caissons, drilled about 40’ down below the surface. This project also includes interior remodeling of some classrooms in the existing school and the link connecting both buildings.
