King Bruwaert House – Healthcare Addition and Renovation Burr Ridge, IL
The Martin Jahn Skilled Nursing Pavilion
Designed to mimic the “small house” feel within the context of a larger layout floor plan, the skilled nursing “Pavilion” is the first phase of the site’s master plan repositioning. The new addition replaces an outdated health center which was no longer able to satisfy the needs of the existing community and evolving expectations.
The 2-story addition includes two “neighborhoods” of 12 single occupancy rooms and one semi-private room for a total of 28-beds. A “race track” floor plan keeps all staff spaces central to the double loaded corridors and resident rooms to the exterior. Each room features high ceilings with large operable windows to increase access to natural day lighting and make the rooms feel large and inviting. With a fully accessible private bathroom, ceiling heater, and roll in showers these new accommodations provide a relaxing respite for residents and improved work environment for nurses and staff.
Each neighborhood includes a residential style “mom’s” kitchen, living, dining, and activities room in a communal and welcoming setting. The elegant finishes complement the existing KBH House with a more vibrant and contemporary spin. The open plan of the public amenities builds on the campus aesthetic of pulling the gardens to the interior with ample exterior landscape views and sight lines. Each space also has direct exterior access via a fenced memory garden or balcony terrace.
The exterior focal point of the Health Center addition is a new entrance with porte cochere, to enhance the skilled nursing wing, not previously provided on the property. The fenced in memory garden and sidewalks compliment the rest of the site so that all levels of care experience the same exterior garden setting so important to King Bruwaert House.
The remaining health center is being renovated with an all new PT/OT space and beauty salon for residents. Existing staff facilities currently located throughout the community are being consolidated into a central location to alleviate inefficient time management and create a more cohesive floor plan. New locker rooms, staff lounge, offices, meeting space, storage and laundry facilities are also being incorporated.
