Victorian Village – Small House Homer Glen, Illinois
The ‘Small House’ concept is a growing trend in the nursing home sector. This type of skilled nursing home provides a place for residents to feel like they are at home, have better focused care and is a grand departure from that large institutional feeling of most nursing homes. Victorian Village in Homer Glen, Illinois completed their CCRC campus with the addition of 50 Skilled Nursing beds situated in this ‘small house’ setting. The community features two 10-bed single story cottages and a two story 30-bed cottage. Each floor features a family room, living room, dining room and kitchen which were designed to resemble the same features you would find in your home. The “small house” concept offers residents individualized care in a community which functions as one large family. All resident rooms are private with a complete bathroom large enough to provide assisted bathing. Each cottage has a screened and open porch as well as an outdoor patio and garden. We often hear the biggest benefit to this type of house is that the residents take part in their lives more prominently because they do not feel confined to their room or bed. They help with food preparation, hear games and activities being played at the common dining room table and want to join in! When the architecture and staff can help enrich the lives of anyone, it can be considered a wonderful success.
