McKnight’s Senior Living recently published an article about the adaptive reuse of shopping malls integrating senior housing, Shopping Malls Being Repurposed for Senior Living. As a leader in senior living community design, SAS Architects was featured, highlighting two mall project developments that integrate senior living components in the greater regional shopping centers. These projects are in various design phases, with our Fox Valley mall project in for permit. See further detail on these projects:
The Sophia at Fox Valley and The Sophia at Hawthorn Mall.
Both projects focus on concierge living for active adults and are over 250,000 square feet while incorporating memory care, independent and assisted living. Modern amenities such as bistros, fitness programming, multiple dining venues, coffee shops, splash pads, spas and salons add to the lively hood and 24/7 activity in redeveloped malls. This concept brings multi-generational ages together with renewed energy for the community, which remains special to these shopping centers.
The national discussion of reuse for existing mall properties will continue as property managers, developers, and owners continue to adapt to new market trends and changing economic situations. Check out the article and project pages on our website for more information.
